The Importance of Rest

The Importance of Rest

We live in a busy world that doesn’t always encourage rest and relaxation. As a result, many people are not making time for the rest that their bodies need and often feel guilty if they are not filling their free time with productive activities. There is always more work to do, something that needs to be cleaned, or a TV show that we have been wanting to watch. We end up filling our day from morning to night and never truly taking time for our bodies to relax.

Rest is necessary for our bodies and minds to perform at optimum levels and goes beyond just getting a good night of sleep. Taking intentional time away from work, stress, and the bright lights of your TV, computer or phone can lead to a healthier and more balanced life. Here are some benefits that allowing your body time to rest can have on your health:

Faster Muscle Recovery

According to an article written in Healthline, when your body is at rest, it uses its energy to help the tissues in your muscles heal and grow, resulting in stronger muscles. Rest also allows your body to replenish glycogen, which is a form of carbohydrates used to fuel a workout. Without resting and allowing your body to recover, you will feel extra muscle fatigue and soreness. This is why many workout routines include a rest day. Your body will not perform at its best if it is constantly pushing itself. It needs ample time to recover.

Have you ever spent twice as long completing something because your thought process was lagging? If you don’t let your mind and body rest, you may have trouble keeping up with your daily routine. Research suggests that overworking can lead to stress and poor performance whereas resting can lead to increased levels of creative and innovative thinking while working. Whether you are spending your energy physically working or challenging your mind, you will find that resting allows you to perform better and be more productive.

Happier Attitude

Many will say that an angry toddler is likely in need of a nap. The same thing may be true for adults after a tiring day. According to a study by Daniel Kahneman and Alan B. Krueger, “sleep quality was the single most influential factor in rating daily mood.” When you are well-rested you are more likely to be able to see things from a different perspective.

Family Time

In today’s world, it can be hard to escape technology that is everywhere around us. Many believe that they are “resting” while on their phones, sitting on a couch while the TV plays in the background. Unfortunately, this is not as beneficial as many would hope. Looking at blue lights from our screens all day makes it harder to fall asleep at night and TV shows and news feeds can bring us overwhelming amounts of mental stimulation. Intentionally taking time to unwind without those distractions around is more beneficial to your health.

A hot tub could be the perfect way for you and your family to engage in relaxing moments together. Soaking in soothing water with the jets running will help your mind and body unwind, leading to better sleep and less stress. Hot tubs are also a way for your family to interact without the distraction of phones. Enjoy a night in your own backyard oasis and let the worries of the day disappear.

Allowing yourself to rest is not laziness. It could very well be the key to a healthier and well-rounded life for you. Whether you choose to relax in your home, take a small nap mid-day, relax in a spa or a bathtub, your body will thank you for taking the time to refocus and recharge.

The Value of a Wellness Routine

The Value of a Wellness Routine

Taking care of yourself should be a top priority but the stress of everyday life can cause us to lose track of our health goals and settle into habits that are hard to break. Forming a wellness routine can be the key to living a healthier lifestyle and the good news is – it is much easier than many people think!

You probably already have a morning and evening routine set in place even if you don’t realize it. The way you make your coffee, the time you leave for work, the time you feed the dog or have the kids brush their teeth are all examples of activities that probably happen around the same time each day. A wellness routine is built off of activities like the ones listed above, however, it is much more than just repeating actions.

What is a Wellness Routine?

A wellness routine is a way of prioritizing things in your life with the goal of living a healthier lifestyle. Many people have health goals but a wellness routine involves looking at every part of your day and transforming it into a naturally healthier life over time.

What are the Benefits?

A wellness routine can provide many benefits depending on what you choose to prioritize. You may place value on spending more time with family into your day and see your relationships grow as a result. Or maybe you intentionally allocate time to go grocery shopping so you are able to cook healthier meals at home. The benefits that you see will come from how you structure your time. If your goal is to exercise more often, try blocking off time in your calendar like you would for a dentist appointment or meeting. Some gyms even allow you to book classes online and then charge a cancellation fee if you don’t end up attending. Having something in your schedule makes you more likely to follow through.

You might be asking yourself, why do I need to make a routine? A study done by Tel Aviv University states that “repetitive routines are calming and help reduce anxiety. They’ll also help you take control of your day and subsequently, your life.” Every time you make a decision, you are making an energetic output. Save your energy for decisions that will create the most value in your life and stop worrying about when you will get all of the little things done. By scheduling out your day, you will find that you have much more time to accomplish your goals and therefore have plenty of time to relax and unwind before bed.

How do I start?

It can be overwhelming to think about where to begin, so just start by writing out the things that must be done every day and choose a time to complete those tasks. Setting a daily routine will allow you to incorporate more things into your day and will help you from stressing over the seemingly never-ending to-do list.

Once you have your daily tasks written down, start a new list with what your overall health goals are. These could include anything from: getting more sleep , staying hydrated, spending time each day journaling, or having more time for family. Once you have these narrowed down, slowly start incorporating these items into your routine.

A wellness routine has to be realistic so plan to make these incremental changes into your life over time. For example, if you want to start waking up earlier in the morning and going to bed sooner, make the change by adjusting your alarm clock in increments of 5 minutes over multiple days. Making small changes over time will make it easier for your body to naturally adapt to your new routine. If you are wanting to exercise more often, plan what times you will exercise that week and put it on your schedule. You might start with a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood twice a week, but over time that can turn into a 30-minute jog every day. It takes time to build up your motivation and see yourself making improvements.

Don’t be discouraged if you make some mistakes along the way. You might sleep through your new alarm or decide to ditch your healthy dinner at home to grab take-out and that is okay. The overall goal is not to restrict your life completely but to lead to a life that is naturally supporting your health and wellness plans.

Hot Water Immersion

Hot Water Immersion

Island Spa Hot Tub

Water not only makes up three-quarters of our body composition but is also essential to our overall health. Numerous studies have shown that soaking in warm or hot water can be extremely beneficial to both the body and the mind. Here are several ways you can benefit from soaking in hot water, as supported by a growing body of scientific research:

When we immerse ourselves in hot water, we increase blood circulation in the body. Higher blood flow allows our cells to heal and regenerate at faster speeds.

Muscle Pain Relief

As blood circulation increases, pain-causing chemicals that are built up in the tissues of the body are released. This helps muscle pain to dissipate quicker. Water’s natural buoyancy is also helpful in relieving pressure in the muscles.

Joint Pain Relief

The buoyancy of water acts as a buffer against the effects of gravity on an injured point of the body. Those who suffer from chronic arthritic pain or sports-related injuries can use warm water immersion to restore and preserve joint strength and flexibility. Just one soak can relieve muscle soreness by quickly dispersing lactic acid in areas of stress.

Lower Blood Pressure

As you immerse yourself in hot water, the body’s first reaction is to try and stabilize your temperature by pumping the heart faster to bring additional blood to the surface where it would normally disperse heat into the air. This increased blood flow means an increased supply of oxygen, antibodies and white blood cells pumping through your body; all important to promoting revitalization of the cells. This initial reaction causes an increase in blood pressure, but because the warmth quickly causes the blood vessels to dilate, the resistance on the heart is lessened, resulting in lower blood pressure.

Cardiovascular Health

Hot water encourages the heart to work faster and more efficiently, similar to how it benefits from exercise. Soaking in warm water increases your heart rate and lowers blood pressure and can be beneficial for improving overall heart muscle efficiency.

Improved Mental Health

Hot water immersion is a safe way to unwind, reduce anxiety, and cope more effectively with the challenges of daily life. Immersing yourself in warm water reduces the hormones related to stress, and causes physical changes to your body resulting in relaxation and reduced levels of anxiety. By regularly soaking in warm water, it’s possible to reduce the effects of stress and improve your overall mental health.

The effects of hot water immersion are highly beneficial, and isn’t a complicated process to follow. It’s as simple as turning on your hot tub and jumping right in. Start improving your overall health and well-being today by treating yourself to a nice, warm soak.

How To: Create a Backyard Oasis

How To: Create a Backyard Oasis

Do you have an outdoor space that you just aren’t sure how to fill or decorate? Outdoor spaces provide the perfect opportunity to create a personal retreat right in the comfort of your own home. After a particularly stressful day, a backyard oasis can become a vital part of your self-care routine. You can turn an empty, bare space into a lush, tropical paradise providing all the therapeutic benefits of nature and the outdoors just steps away from your back door. Having this kind of space also presents the perfect backdrop to host intimate group gatherings or parties.

Here are some tips for creating a backyard oasis:

Lighting is an important factor to consider as it enhances the aesthetic appeal and creates the mood and ambiance of a living space. The right lighting creates a safe and comfortable environment besides adding style to the overall décor. If you are hoping to create a warm and relaxing look, consider incorporating lanterns and candles. If your space will be dedicated to hosting friends and events often, consider using fun features like outdoor string lights or bright LED’s.

Filling your oasis with trees, shrubs, and plants adds serious curb appeal and character to your oasis. It’s also one of the best ways to combat climate change. Whether it’s a small orchid or a large tree, plants have the ability to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Who doesn’t want cleaner air to breathe? For those who live in tight quarters, plants can also be used to add and provide privacy. Smaller plants like succulents can be used to add beautiful touches to the overall ambiance. Don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb – faux plants can be an effective, low maintenance alternative.

Special Touches

Consider adding a focal point to the space for you and your guests to gather around and enjoy each other’s company. This could be as simple as an outdoor table that can also be used to set food on or play games around. You could also add a water feature for entertainment or create a cozy atmosphere for conversation with a fireplace or bonfire pit.

Don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun adding decorations – this is your space! Since you will be the one spending the most time in it, be sure to personalize it with things that you love. Adding all the little touches that bring you joy is what will make this truly feel like a backyard oasis. Start by choosing some of your favorite colors to incorporate, and your space can continue to evolve as you add your favorite things.

While trips and vacations are always nice, home is where we spend the majority of our time. It’s important to have an area at home that is always available to us for relaxation and recharging. Creating this kind of space doesn’t have to be difficult – especially when following the steps above.

Spa Tips for Winter

Spa Tips for Winter

Many say that winter is the best time to enjoy your spa. The warm water and steam rising from the spa can protect you from the crisp, winter air and allow you to enjoy the beauty that the season provides. Here are a few tips for using and maintaining your spa during the wintertime.

This is more than just a fashion statement! Your body will be warm inside the spa but the top of your head might be chilly. Put a hat on to ensure that every part of you stays warm while out in the winter conditions.

What is a winter spa without a warm beverage to sip on? Bring out a tray of goodies to keep nearby while you relax!

When you are not using your spa, be sure to cover it to keep the heat in and debris out! Check your cover for leaks and tears to make sure it stays in good condition.

Keeping the water at a consistent, warm temperature is more efficient and helps prevent pipes from freezing. It also makes your spa ready to use at a moment’s notice.

Evaporation happens even in cold temperatures and maintaining a high water level is necessary for the pumps to work correctly. We recommend you keep the water above the jets (except for “neck jets”) and below the pillows.

Road conditions could make it difficult for you to get out and buy chemicals during the winter. Keep some extra supplies on hand so there is no stress during the wintertime.

If you decide to drain your spa during freezing conditions, contact your local authorized dealer for assistance.

A spa provides the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind at home. Whether alone or with friends and family, your spa will be the perfect place to enjoy winter evenings.
